Mapping World Economic Complexity

Current productive know-how and implied capability accumulation potential

About this Project

This interactive platform visualizes the economic complexity landscape of World Countries. Utilizing BACI trade data, it aims to provide policymakers, researchers, and the public with deep insights into the productive capabilities and future structural transformation potential of each country. The tools below allow for both cross-sectional comparison and longitudinal trend analysis, shedding light on how national economies are evolving.

Methodology

Economic Complexity Index (ECI)

A measure of the knowledge intensity of an economy. ECI captures the amount of sophisticated know-how embedded in the productive structure of a country. A higher ECI suggests a more diversified and complex set of capabilities, often correlated with higher income levels and faster future growth.

Complexity Outlook Index (COI)

A measure of the "strategic value" of a country's current capabilities. COI quantifies how easy it would be for a country to diversify into new, complex products based on what it already produces. A higher COI implies many nearby opportunities in the Product Space.

Economic Complexity Analysis

Analyze the sophistication of productive structures using the Economic Complexity Index (ECI) and Complexity Outlook Index (COI).

Competitiveness Analysis (RCA)

Evaluate global competitiveness by analyzing the number of products exported competitively and the diversity of export markets.
